After a brief time riding field bikes and eventually racing motocross, Steve Dixon found his vocation on the other side of the pit wall, getting his first taste of being a GP mechanic in 1990, spannering for Jem Whatley aboard the Mitsui YZ250. The following years saw many successes and memorable moments, One highlight being the 1994 Motocross Des Nations which saw Steve's rider Paul Malin help clinch the title in Roggenburg, Switzerland – another gem again featuring Paul Malin was Paul's second in the 1996 125cc World Championship. The team have also accrued 5 British Championships to date.
It's no fluke that many young talented riders have obtained their first overall GP victories whilst riding for the Team, including Brian Jorgensen, Billy Mackenzie, Andrew Macfarlane, Carl Nunn and Zach Osborne.
After easing up from GP mechanic to Team co-ordinator and eventually team Yamaha UK manager, in 2002 the team changed dynamic – Steve was now the team owner as well as manager and technician. Bike It came onboard as title sponsors in 2004 and in 2008 the team changed to UTAG Yamaha, to promote an innovative new product from Bike it.
Away from the track Steve takes a keen interest in formula 1, Moto GP and the World Superbikes, the technical aspect of these sports appeal Steve’s meticulous nature and anything that he can learn to push the team to perform to a higher standard. Any spare time is spent keeping sponsors in the picture with regard to results as well as feed-back on how their products perform at the highest level of Motocross competition.
Keeping the team motivated is also a key strength that Steve has built on over the years and a consistent team roster is proof that Utag Yamaha is a well oiled machine, long hours and extra effort are part of the success of the team and this attitude comes from the top of team in Steve Dixon.
Even with the responsibility and massive work load Steve still finds time to spend with his 2 sons Bradley and Jack.
