British Victory for Pocock
Landrake was the last round of the championship and with Zach out with a broken collarbone it was all down to Mel to pull it out of the bag for the Utag Yamaha Team.
With great weather Mel put in some good laps in qualifying and an eighth place ensured a good gate pick for the uphill drag of Landrake Moto Parc.
A great start in race 1 saw Mel in 4th position and the ever determined 17 year old Utag Yamaha rider powered his way up the long hills and started to gain ground on the leaders. Soon Mel moved up into 2nd and began chasing down the leader and then moved into the position that he could of only dreamed about at the beginning of the year, first place!
Mel soaked up the pressure and rode a mature race from the front on the tricky Landrake surface. Once in the lead Mel was level headed and took a convincing victory for his first British championship race win.
Race 2 was about securing the top spot on the podium, knowing how easy it is to lose the overall victory with a bad ride in moto2; Mel put in another good start and pulled though into 7th on the first lap. By lap four Mel was on the tail of 3rd position and soon found a way past, but with experienced GP rider Pascal Leuret on Mel's tail, and knowing that Mel just needed to finish in the top ten to get the overall, the team put out the board urging Mel not to get involved in any scuffles. Mel eventually let Leuret by and held onto 4th to the flag for a comfortable 1st overall and smiles all around the Utag Yamaha camp.
Mel Pocock: "It was brilliant, I cant believe I've not only won a race but I've won the MX2 class overall here today. I am so happy and I would like to thank every one for helping me get on the podium today. It will be the first of many as I have only just turned 17. I can't believe this has actually happened."
Steve Dixon: "Wow what a turn up for the books! Mel rode a blinder and despite going down in moto 1 he plugged away and eventually got into the lead and took the win. I would like to thank all the sponsors for the backing that enables us to keep the Utag Yamaha name at the front. It's a great boost for us as we go into the off season and we will be working hard to keep the bikes at the front off the pack in 2010. We have just received the new Yamaha 250f and it is a huge step forward in the chassis department and that can only give our riders more confidence at the races next year."
